Hits & Misses: Quit picking on hikers

Vail Daily Editorial BoardVail CO, Colorado

Send your hit or miss to Opinion Editor Tamara Miller at tmiller@vaildaily.com.Hit: To John Atkins, the U.S. Ski Teams former athletic trainer, who was inducted into the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. During his tenure, Atkins trained and conditioned alpine skier Tamara McKinney, who became the first and only American woman to win the World Cup overall title. Miss: To whining about hiking on legitimate trails being “harmful” to the environment. Oh please. Thats getting more than a little carried away about things, don’t you think? People should be able to go for a walk without having to bear some guilt of species for being human in this world. And hiking is a lot less destructive, than, say just about any other activity imaginable. Sheesh.Hit: To Eagle County teachers, who work hard to improve themselves, their students and their schools. Theyll face challenges this year, for sure. Some of those challenges are old a growing immigrant student body, parents who are uninvolved in their childs education. Some of those challenges are new a new, interim superintendent, new administrators. The district also is welcoming dozens of new teachers. Heres hoping this school year is a fun and successful one.
