Winter is officially here.

The slopes are open, we’ve carved the turkey, we’re praying for powder… and the Vilar Performing Arts Center is kicking into high gear.

Today is the annual tree lighting in Beaver Creek. Festivities include free ice skating, a gingerbread house competition, a visit from Santa and more. Immediately following the tree lighting, guests are encouraged to come down to the Vilar Center for cookies, hot chocolate and a complimentary screening of the holiday film “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.” The film starts promptly at 7 p.m., and free tickets are available at the box office starting at 11 a.m.

And it wouldn’t be winter without the annual Warren Miller Ski Movie. This year’s film, “Children of Winter,” will show today at 9:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 6 and 9 p.m.

On Tuesday, Dec. 2 we present Cirque Dreams “Jungle Fantasy.” I discussed this family-friendly performance in my article last week, but for more information please check it out on http://www.vilarpac.org. This show is truly a hybrid of Broadway and circus: “The Lion King” meets Cirque du Soliel meets The Chinese Acrobats. It’s an incredible visual fantasy with beautiful costumes, scenery and lighting effects, all setting the stage for some of the best acrobats, aerialists, jugglers, dancers and strongmen in the business.

The show just finished a 12-week Broadway run, and comes to the Vilar Center with the same cast of seasoned and critically-acclaimed performers intact. So treat yourself and your family to this spectacular show.

On Dec. 12 and 13 we present “‘Tis the Season” ” A Holiday Celebration. This show features many of your favorite local performers including Don Watson, Beth Swearingen, Kathy Morrow, Tony Gulizia, Bob Finnie, Helmut Fricker, Pat Hamilton, Peter Vavra, Mickey Poage, Mercedes Daphne, The Dickens Carolers, Mountain Harmony and more than 100 of our community’s young performing artists from the Vail Performing Arts Academy and The Vail Youth Ballet.

The evening is a tribute to the most time-tested traditions of the holiday season through song, dance and musical theatre. We present the show every other year, and it’s always a runaway success. This event is the perfect way to get in the holiday spirit and a great opportunity to see some of the greatest talent in the Vail Valley, together on one stage.

The proceeds from “‘Tis the Season” benefit the Vilar Center Community Performance Fund. The fund plays an integral role in fostering the performing arts in the Vail Valley by distributing approximately $60,000 annually in grants to local performing arts groups, enabling them to present their shows at the Vilar Center. I would like to thank all of the performers for donating their time and talent to this worthy cause, and a special thanks to Friends of the Dance for their additional support.

Additional upcoming Holiday events at the VPAC include The Charlie Daniels Band on Dec. 14; The Irish Tenors Holiday concert (with an orchestra!) on Dec. 22; the annual favorite “A Christmas Carol” on Dec. 23; and many more events spanning from Christmas to New Years. For a full schedule, visit http://www.vilarpac.org.

I look forward to celebrating the holidays with you at the Vilar Performing Arts Center.
