Icing on the Lake

The town of Avon’s annual Icing on the Lake event is from 2 to 5 p.m today. The event, which is free and especially popular with families, kicks off the winter season for Nottingham Park in Avon. During the winter season, the cabin is open from noon to 8 p.m. each day.

Families can enjoy ice skating on Nottingham Lake with $1 skate rentals and then gather around the bonfire and enjoy a cup of hot cider. There also will be face painting, a balloon sculptor, winter holiday crafts, snowmobile rides for kids and live reindeer. Santa will visit from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Those who bring a canned food item for the Salvation Army receive a warm bowl of chili.

Skate with Santa

Children and their parents are invited to skate with Santa at 5:45 p.m. on Monday and 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Dobson Ice Arena. Skate rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Call 970-479-2271 for details.

Hanukkah happenings

The Chabad Jewish Center will be hosting Chanukah on Ice at the Dobson Ice Arena from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Vail’s annual Matzah Ball Party at the Tap Room in Vail Village is set for 9 p.m. Wednesday, and a Grand Ice Menorah Lighting in Lionshead Village will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 27. Society of Superheroes on Ice

The Vail Recreation District and Skate Club of Vail will present an ice skating extravaganza Dec. 27 and 28 at 6:15 p.m. Superheroes on Ice will feature local skating students along with nationally ranked amateurs and pay tribute to classic superheroes including Superman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers and Spider-Man, to name a few.
