Special to the Vail DailyVail Valley music: Cherish the Ladies present their "Celtic Christmas" show on Dec. 14 at the Vilar Center.

VAIL VALLEY, Colorado – The holiday season is upon us in Colorado’s Vail Valley! It’s always a shock for me the first time I hear Christmas music playing in the stores and on the radio. But once Thanksgiving has come and gone, I truly fall into the spirit of the season … and I can’t get enough! We have a great lineup for you this holiday season. If Christmas music is your thing, you’ve come to the right place.Enjoy a contemporary take on traditional holiday music when David Archuleta performs “Christmas From the Heart” on Dec. 6. The “American Idol” runner-up and international recording sensation hits the road this holiday season in support of his holiday album by the same name. The performance will feature seasonal standards “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Silent Night” and Archuleta’s original composition “Melodies of Christmas,” along with his other hit songs. The festive programming continues on Dec. 14 when Cherish the Ladies bring their “Celtic Christmas” to Beaver Creek. When describing Cherish the Ladies, the critics say it best – “It is simply impossible to imagine an audience that wouldn’t enjoy what they do,” says The Boston Globe; “An astonishing array of virtuosity,” raves The Washington Post; “Expands the annals of Irish music in America … the music is passionate, tender and rambunctious,” says The New York Times.I’ve also heard comparisons drawn between Cherish the Ladies and the Chieftains – that they are perhaps the female counterpart of the legendary Celtic group. Their performance will be rich in holiday tradition, including a mix of timeless holiday tunes as well as traditional Irish jigs, reels, songs and step dancing. We switch things up again the following weekend with Newgrass legends Bel Fleck & the Flecktones: “The Holiday Tour.” Their Grammy-winning Christmas album “Jingle All the Way” got good reviews, with the Associated Press saying “{it} does what all great Christmas records ought to – keep the essence of the underlying songs while bringing out something new and unexpected to make them fresh and worth another listen.”We presented Bel Fleck & the Flecktones in 2007, and many Vilar Center regulars have said that their musicality and dynamicism as a band are unrivaled, especially in our small theater. It will be fun and exciting to see their take on holiday music. The album includes a sparkling banjo-harmonic arrangement of “Christmas Time is Here” and a fiery rendition of “Sleigh Ride” – refreshing and unique interpretations on classics that can become redundant by the end of the season. They’ll also play timeless Flecktones songs from their vast library which has earned them 18 Grammy Awards since they formed in 1989 … a diverse evening of music not to be missed. The holiday lineup continues through New Years with a slate of programming including family shows, concerts and Cirque productions. There is truly something for everyone in this busy season. Because Beaver Creek is teeming with guests and locals alike at Christmas, many of these shows are selling fast. Visit or call the box office at 970-845-TIXS(8497) to secure your seats today. We look forward to seeing you at the theater in this festive season. Happy holidays!
