Home near Sweetwater destroyed by fire
EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado – A ranch home near Sweetwater Lake burned to the ground Sunday. It might have been a total loss before the first emergency call came in.
Gypsum Fire Department Deputy Chief Justin Kirkland said the home, on the 7W Ranch near Sweetwater Lake, was already fully ablaze before the first 911 call came in just before 4 p.m. Given the distance, with a final few miles of tight, steep road to get to the ranch, firefighters finally arrived at the home about 4:40 p.m.
Firefighters brought nearly 7,500 gallons of water to the fire scene, but when they arrived, the main job was to keep the fire from spreading into U.S. Forest Service land that surrounds the property.
Crews from Gypsum Fire were joined at the scene by crews and trucks from the Greater Eagle Fire Protection District, based in Eagle, and the Eagle River Fire Protection District. The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, the Western Eagle County Ambulance District and Forest Service rangers also were at the scene.
While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Kirkland said there are no signs of foul play. No injuries were reported and no one was in the home at the time of the fire.
