Home Outpost and Auction House to open this weekend in Gypsum
GYPSUM — Margie Hamrick passionately believes that your home can be about style and sustainability mixed together with a healthy dose of charity. Her new business — The Home Outpost and Auction House — is a reflection of that philosophy.
The business, opening this weekend in the Caddis Corner area just east of Costco in Gypsum, is billed as a fine home consignment and antiques store featuring furnishings, antiques, art and more. Hamrick brings extensive experience in the building and design realm along with a background in estate auction operations to her new business. But her vision for The Home Outpost extends beyond a simple consignment model. She sees The Home Outpost as a fashionable way to promote sustainability and with her auction house operation, she hopes her business can give back to local charities.
Hamrick first came up with the idea for The Home Outpost a number of years ago when she was involved in the construction of a LEED-certified home. “That’s when I really became interested in restoring and re-using furniture,” she said. “Of course that is the most sustainable way to decorate a home that you can get.”
She believes in the three Rs of home decoration — re-used, revived and rescued furniture and accents. But she does not believe in compromising on style, as the high end pieces in her new shop demonstrate.
“People have spent years traveling the world to find these pieces,” Hamrick said.
Consignment and Charity
For anyone looking to shed an expensive piece of furniture that no longer has a place in his or her home or who is ready to part with a family antique or piece of art, Hamrick said The Home Outpost offers a high-end consignment and auction house experience. She invites local residents including merchants, antique dealers and interior designers to consign their items. Additionally, she will be soliciting artisans and vendors to participated in her Trading Post option, which allows them to have space on The Home Outpost sales floor or website.
“All consigned items must be pre-approved by The Home Outpost team, so we maintain a high level of quality and design, assuring our consignors that their items are seen in an upscale atmosphere,” Hamrick said.
Pieces can be consigned for a 60- to 120-day selling period. If an item does not sell within that time period, then the consigner can turn furniture into cash for the charity of his or her choice by allowing The Home Outpost to feature the item in a Charity Saturday Auction and Last Call section of the business website.
“It’s the ultimate win-win situation,” Hamrick said.
She noted that a charity auction will be held at the store every Saturday and anyone who donates an item for sale can choose where the money goes. The designated charity will receive 60 percent of all funds raised.
“We host, manage, market and promote estate sales,” Hamrick said. “Any items left in your home can be donated to our Charity Auction House or we can move the items to our showroom for consignment.”
Hamrick believes The Home Outpost is offering a new concept for people in the Vail, Aspen and Steamboat markets and that her store location next to Costco provides a central setting.
“This store is going to be so much fun. It’s all about old meeting new,” she said.
