Home rule, smoking ban pass

Matt Zalaznick

EAGLE COUNTY ” A group of residents will now get to work proposing ways to reform Eagle County’s government.

Potential changes include expanding the Board of County Commissioners from three to five members, removing political parties from county races and making positions like sheriff, coroner and county clerk appointed ” rather than elected ” posts.

The vote was close, with 4,075 for the measure and 3,850 against.

Nine residents were elected to the commission that will write a charter that includes these changes. Voters will have to approve the charter in a future election.

Colleen McCarthy, Heather Lemon, John Horan-Kates, Kathy Chandler-Henry, Don Cohen, Charlie Wick, Tom Edwards, Jacque Whitsitt and Michael Bair won seats.

Results are not yet available in the race for the final two at-large seats on the commission.

Voters overwhelmingly endorsed having the commissioners ban smoking in public places, such as bars and restaurants, in Eagle-Vail, Beaver Creek, Edwards and other unincorporated parts of Eagle County.

More than 6,000 voted for the ban and only about 2300 voted against it.
