Homebrew contest winner announced

EDWARDS, Colorado – Crazy Mountain Brewing Company, based in the Vail Valley, has announced the winner of its second annual Homebrew ProAm, Ethan St. Germain of Vail. St. Germain’s Pale Ale beat out 38 other beer entries from homebrewers around the state of Colorado. The judging took place on Sunday, when five local beer experts sampled and scored the many entries across all different beer styles. After 4 1/2 grueling hours, they came upon the winner of this creative contest.

Germain moved to East Vail in 1998 from Maine for the love of snowboarding. He began homebrewing in his teens when he was not allowed to buy beer, but was allowed to buy a brew kit. His favorite part about brewing beer is being home alone on Sundays, listening to good records, drinking and brewing his beer.

“Some people go to church, some people brew beer,” he said.

St. Germain currently brews every Sunday year round. When he is not at his full time job as the snowboard shop buyer for Buzz’s Boards in Vail Village, St. Germain enjoys homebrewing, reading beer books and working on his Harley and ’63 Chevy truck.

“We are so excited to have Ethan come in at 5 a.m. and participate in the whole professional brewing experience from mashing in to kegging,” said Brewmaster Kevin Selvy.

The brewers at Crazy Mountain will be scaling up St. Germain’s unique recipe and ordering ingredients so he can brew his Pale Ale alongside our brewmaster on our 17.5 barrel system. St. Germain will also have the opportunity to name the beer and pair it with a local nonprofit of his choice. The beer will be released at a special party at Crazy Mountain Brewery on March 30.

The brewery will be hosting its third annual Homebrew ProAm in February 2013.
