GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” The Garfield County Coroner’s office on Thursday released the name of a man whose body was found in a cave near No Name in late March.
Officials identified the man as Gary Petkus, 57, and said the man had been homeless in the Glenwood Springs area for the last 20 to 30 years, according to the coroner’s office.
No final report on the man’s death has been received, but preliminary indications are that he probably died of natural causes.
Climbers found Petkus’ body on March 31 in a cave east of the No Name Tunnel, north of Interstate 70 approximately at mile marker 119. Deputies found no evidence of foul play at the scene, according to previous reports.
Homeless people in the community have said Petkus remained in his cave for weeks on end.
Petkus was presumed to have been dead for a few weeks, maybe even over a month, before his body was discovered.
