Hospital hosts holiday dance
Teens who are home from college reunite for the evening, sharing war stories from the dorms. Other guests – from infants to great grandparents – enjoy watching the young ones frolic on the dance floor. This year, the event was held at the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort. But a note of sadness touched this year’s dance, which was held Dec. 28 in honor of Thelma Brittan’s birthday. Brittan, who passed away Nov. 4., and her husband, Gordon, were an integral part of the marvelous hospital we enjoy today.”The Vail Valley Medical Center been a truly become a world class hospital – from Orthopedics, and the Shaw Cancer Treatment Center, the Women’s and Children’s Center in which nearly 1000 babies were delivered this past year,” said Ed O’Brien, chairman of the hospital board. As always, Rex Keep created family portraits to be placed in the silver keepsake frames given as party favors. Tables in the ballroom were decorated with trees, each created by talented hands and sparkling with a different theme. Trees were decorated with candy, ornaments or white feathers and a disco ball. Each tree was available for an opening bid of $50, which helped bring in some extra money for the center.”Jill Smirl, who was new to the dinner dance committee this year, really worked hard to make the dinner a success,” said Marty Suarez of the development department of the Vail Valley Medical Center Foundation. “Debbie King-Ford, who chaired the committee, came up with the creative idea for the trees.”Honored at the event were Jack Lewis and Paul Johnston, who were stepping down from the hospital’s board after years of service.Patron-sponsors included El Pomar Foundation, Wells Fargo Bank, West Star Bank, Eagle Vista Investments LLC, Steadman Hawkins Clinic, John H.
