Hot weather fuels fire in Rifle

RIFLE – Firefighters are largely allowing a fire on about 800 acres in the White River National Forest to burn for the benefit of vegetation and wildlife habitat in the area.

The U.S. Forest Service says no private property, structures or recreational areas are threatened, but there was smoke in the area Sunday.

Elsewhere in Colorado, fire managers were allowing a 200-acre fire about 25 miles southwest of Rangely to burn up to natural fire barriers. A historical cabin was within three-quarters of a mile away and a home was about 1.5 miles away, but they weren’t immediately threatened.

Near Meeker, firefighters were mopping up a 322-acre fire started a few days ago by lightning.
