Housing authority discussion continues
Vail, CO Colorado
EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado ” County officials will continue to discuss forming a housing authority at a public hearing on Tuesday.
The purpose of the authority would be to manage the county’s affordable housing projects and allow the county to build homes and buy land. The county commissioners would preside over the authority.
For now the authority wouldn’t have the ability to tax, but it would be able to borrow money, said Alex Potente, managing director of the Housing and Development Department.
“It’s just to enable us to do things we’re not able to do now, like borrow money, and it gives us clear legal authority to do things like Stratton Flats,” he said, referring to the county’s recent $4.5 million joint investment with a private developer to build an affordable neighborhood in Gypsum.
For now the housing authority would not be a multi-jurisdictional group, although in the future the hope is for other towns and governments to join in, Commissioner Peter Runyon said.
The county has the 25 supporting signatures required by state law to form the authority. This will be the first public hearing held on the subject.
