SUMMIT COUNTY, Colorado ” A hunter who mistakenly shot and killed a horse this week was cited with careless hunting by the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

The man has been identified as Jarrod M. Smith, 30, of Savannah, Ga.

“He was extremely remorseful,” said division spokesman Randy Hampton.

Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in the hunting accident Tuesday evening in the Slate Creek drainage, Hampton said.

The misdemeanor is punishable by a fine of $100 to $1,000 and up to one year in jail.

Smith also faces the possible loss of his hunting privileges in Colorado and other states, pending the outcome of the legal proceedings and an administrative hearing.

According to preliminary reports from wildlife managers, the horse was tied up and saddled, but rider-less.

No other details of the investigation have been released.
