Hurricane relief efforts

There are several hurricane relief efforts under way or planned in Eagle County:• Dr. Bruce Weinstein, the “Ethics Guy,” leads a community presentation on ethics in the workplace at the Vilar Center from noon-1 p.m., Friday. Open to the public; donations will be collected at the door. Proceeds go to the Salvation Army and the local Red Cross chapters. Contact Seth Ehrlich at 845-7040 or seth@sosoutreach.org.

Dog wash benefit for rescued pets, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday at the Big Dog Truck, Car and Dog Wash in Gypsum. All proceeds will benefit pets rescued from the hurricane by the Eagle County Humane Society.• Red Canyon High School and Gypsum Creek Middle School are sponsoring a chili cook-off and silent auction at the Eagle Pavilion on Sept. 24 from 1-5 p.m. Entry is $5 to grab some chili, and all proceeds go to a districtwide fund Alpine Bank is matching. A one-day fundraiser of pilates and yoga classes, Monday at Synergy in the Sheraton Mountain Vista. $15 per group class and all proceeds will be donated. Call 748-1911 for more information. The Bachelor Gulch Ritz-Carlton has partnered with restaurants in the valley and food and beverage distributors to offer a Taste of the Valley-style event to raise money for Gulf Coast hurricane victims. The event is Sept. 28 at the hotels ballroom from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets range from $75 to $150. For information call 343-1161 or 845-TIXS for tickets.• Big Easy Benefit. Featuring Voices of the Wetlands All Star Band, a benefit for the musicians of New Orleans. Band members include Cyril Neville, George Porter Jr., Anders Osborne, Tab Benoit and others. • Go to Dine Out the Help. On Oct. 5 participating restaurants that are members of the Colorado Restaurants will donate a portion of sales to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Restaurants can sign up at coloradorestaurants.com by Sept. 29. • Performances of “Bone Chiller”, a comedic murder mystery “whodunit” performed by local Eagle-based acting group, the Porch Light Players. All proceeds from 3 p.m. matinee performance on Oct. 30 go to for Katrina relief efforts. Tickets go on sale Oct. 14. To purchase, contact John Lowery at 328-1005 or 471-1829. Ongoing relief drives• “Cans for Katrina”: Here’s what Jane Leptovska and Karli Scherer are doing in their “Cans for Katrina” effort. Drop-off boxes for canned food are at the Vail Daily Building in Eagle-Vail, Battle Mountain High School, Red Sandstone Elementary School and the Avon Recreation Center. Items can also be dropped off at Scherer’s home. Call 331-9920 to set up a time. Cans for cash donations are at Mojo Music in Avon, Radio Shack in Avon, Avon Bakery and the Blue Moose in Beaver Creek. • “Kids Helping Kids” needs volunteers. Students are collecting toys, stuff animals and other items to donate to children in hurricane shelters. For more information: Shirley Moseley, 926-5145. $5 or more for Vail Cares bracelets. Proceeds go to Feed the Childrens efforts in the Gulf Coast and the local Salvation Army for any evacuees relocated to the valley. The bracelets will be on sale at the Big Easy Benefit, Oct. 1. The Colorado Veterinary Medical Foundation is accepting donations for animals rescued from the Gulf Coast. Because animals have been relocated to Colorado, donations also are needed within the state. • Verbatim Booksellers and The Bookworm will donate $1 for every “Lord of the Flies” copy sold as part of the September valleywide read program. Alpine Bank will match the total donation amount up to $50,000. Verbatim owner Robert Aiken chose the book because it “illustrates the savageness of mob mentality and the results of a society broken down,” he said.• This off-season Terra Bistro wants to raise $50,000 for Katrina relief. They are donating 25 percent of each bill to the relief fund. Call 476-6836 for reservations.• Brush Creek Elementary families are collecting personal hygiene products, canned food and clothing at the school. All items will be donated to the Salvation Army to support relief efforts at Lowry Air Force Base. The drive will continue through September 16th .
