I-70 to shut down Tuesday at Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Colorado – Work to pry loose about 40 boulders poised precariously over Interstate 70 above Georgetown will shut down the high-country transportation artery Tuesday and, potentially, Wednesday.
Truckers, businesses, commuters, visitors and high-country residents are plotting how to dodge the rock- scaling work by Colorado Department of Transportation crews.
Most plan to drive early – before the 9 a.m. closure – or late – after the highway reopens at 5 p.m.
And they agree that while it may be inconvenient, safety is the top prioriy.
“Rocks fall in the mountains all the time – and after all, we live in the Rocky Mountains,” said Cora Lou Anderson of Georgetown. “We have to have this rock mitigation to make the highway safe.”
