I-70 truck wreck under investigation

A woman was injured Friday when a runaway truck trailer slammed into her vehicle, causing it to flip over a guardrail on Interstate 70.The accident, which occurred Friday morning near the Main Vail exit on I-70, stopped westbound traffic for about 30 minutes as police cleared the roadway.Police are still investigating the crash, caused when a flatbed trailer detached from the truck towing it and collided with another truck, said Officer Samantha Graves. The truck that was hit rolled off the roadway, went over the guardrail and landed on its wheels near the Town of Vail’s public works shop. Firefighters had to extricate the woman driving the truck. She was taken to Vail Valley Medical Center for treatment, but was expected to be released Friday. The woman was not wearing a seatbelt, Graves said.Police are trying to determine how the trailer detached. Graves did not know yet if charges will be filed against the driver of the truck pulling the trailer.Despite having an officer directing traffic away from the crash site in the right lane, many drivers did not move over into the left lane. Graves said that made it difficult for police to investigate the accident.”People were staying in the right lane because they were being passed,” she said. “I don’t care if you have to be in a dead stop, you need to get in the left lane.”Staff writer Tamara Miller can be reached via e-mail at: tmiller@vaildaily.com or by calling 949-0555 ext. 607.
