Independence Pass, near Aspen, opens for the season

PITKIN COUNTY, Colorado ” The Colorado Department of Transportation will reopen Independence Pass on Highway 82 for the season Thursday. Last year, the opening was delayed until after the holiday due to adverse weather.
Crews on the both east and west sides have spent the past few days and weeks with avalanche control (east side), clearing snow, clearing ditches, sweeping, repairing pot holes, striping, signing, repairing guardrail and much more.
The 12,095-foot pass is closed each winter due to winter weather conditions. Maintenance crews plan to open the pass at 2 p.m. Thursday, weather permitting. Motorists should be advised that any spring snowstorms could slow traffic at times.
A survey showed a good bit of support for local government action to bolster workforce housing in town. For now though, that support stops at supporting a new tax for funding.
