ASPEN – The decades-old rivalry between Aspen and Vail has advanced to the virtual battlefield, with a gnome as referee.

Travelocity is asking followers of its Facebook page to cast a vote on which ski resort is better. The contest started at 7 a.m. Wednesday and continues for a week. The travel booking website’s Roaming Gnome, famous for his misadventures on television commercials, will visit the winning resort for various shenanigans after the contest is over.

Vail held a 54 to 46 percent lead in the voting at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Voters had a chance to write comments on the Travelocity Facebook page, and some were zingers.

“Vail sucks,” was the deep thought of one Aspen fan.

“Aspen has what? Drug-crazed celebs and a few watering holes? Just sayin’,” countered one of the Vail faithful, who also touted the resorts 5,289 acres and 1,500 acres of “corduroy” each day.

Another Vail supporter wrote, “Charlie Sheen does not like gnomes. Come to Vail.”

Extreme skier Chris Davenport promised to hike the Roaming Gnome to the top of Highland Bowl if Aspen wins. “It would be a pleasure and an honor your Gnomeness,” Davenport wrote.

That was countered by a Vail fan’s comment, “Real skier likes Vail. Gnome is a real skier. Gnome should come to Vail.”

A voter can cast multiple ballots, so the contest might be rigged. Vail Resorts has many more employees than the Aspen Skiing Co., noted Skico spokesman Jeff Hanle. He’s relying on the worldwide loyal fans of Aspen to rally for the contest.

The Aspen vs. Vail contest is the third faceoff staged on Travelocity’s Facebook page. Banff topped Whistler in the first grudge match this season. Utah, as a whole, came out on top over Lake Tahoe in the second scrum.

Now it’s Aspen and Vail’s turn.
