James Norman Richardson, a ski racer and 10th Mountain Division Soldier, died Jan. 24, 2005 at his home in Crystal River, Vt. His daughter, Trudy Jo Richardson, is a Vail resident.As a member of the Army’s elite 10th Mountain Division, which trained at a base camp near Leadville, Richardson helped drive the German army from Northern Italy during World War II.After the war, Richardson trained Army soldiers, including Rangers, with the skiing and rock climbing skills he used in the Italian Alps and Riva Ridge. Vail’s Riva Ridge run is named after the famous Italian ridge, where the 10th Mountain Division faced some of its most difficult battles.Richardson was also an avid ski racer, and was inducted into the Vermont Ski Hall of Fame in 2003.– TB
