It’s no secret that children like to pound on things, but sometimes it’s not until you put them in a drum circle that you see they might have some real, tangible talent for percussion.
All 6 to 12-year-old kids are welcome to let their inner percussionist shine during the Jammin’ Jazz Kids Drum Circle on Sunday at the Jazz Tent during the Vail Farmers’ Market and Art Show.
Renowned drummer, percussionist and world music instructor Carl Dixon along with fellow Ginga Band musician Francisco Marquez will be leading the free, 45-minute class. The open structure will allow children to practice hands-on percussion techniques on a series of drums, samba and percussion instruments.
“I’ve never worked with kids that were scared or timid to play on drums,” Dixon said. “All kids are intrigued by drums and they don’t really hesitate to give them a try.”
In addition to performing in Ginga Band, which will play free live sets from 12 to 3 p.m. on Sunday following the Jammin’ Jazz Kids event, Dixon is also the director of the Boulder Samba Group and has taught musicians of all levels, both proficient and brand new.
“One of the great things about samba music and Brazilian drumming is that it’s very accessible,” he said. “It’s very well-suited to students of all ages and all abilities. This can definitely be seen at the Boulder Samba School, which is comprised of percussion students as well as students with absolutely no experience. I really invite everyone to come check it out Sunday and stick around to see the performance.”
Jammin’ Jazz Kids is part of the 19th annual Vail Jazz Festival presented by the Vail Jazz Foundation, which delivers free live music throughout the summer every Sunday at the Vail Farmers’ Market and Restaurant Kelly Liken and also brings in internationally renown performers every Thursday evening for Jazz at Vail Square. The festival culminates with a five-day celebration of live jazz during the Labor Day weekend Jazz Party.
