VAIL — If there’s any sound that rivals the mighty acoustics of The Philadelphia Orchestra reverberating off the walls of the Rocky Mountains, it’s the contained power of a few select orchestra musicians playing in an intimate, open jam format for a small, lucky audience. Throw in one of the country’s top jazz trumpeters and you’ve got a serious ensemble of sound magic.

This unique setup comes to life following the Bravo! Vail Philadelphia Orchestra concert on Saturday with the Philly Jam — Don Liuzzi on drums, Hal Robinson on bass, Tony Micili on vibes, Larry McKenna on tenor sax and Tom Lawton on keyboard — matching melodies with special guest Terell Stafford on trumpet. The performance begins at 9:15 p.m. at Larkspur Restaurant and is a joint production of the Vail Jazz Festival and Bravo! Vail.

Following the orchestra’s performance at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater, these select instrumentalists will accompany Stafford, who is part of the Vail Jazz Party Band, performing at the Vail Jazz Festival’s climatic Labor Day Weekend Party that wraps up the festival’s 20th anniversary season. Stafford has played a key part in mentoring the country’s young, up-and-coming jazz artists via the Vail Jazz Foundation’s All-Stars Workshop during the years and is the director of Jazz Studies at Temple University. He has performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center numerous times and has also performed for the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno.”

“The Jazz After concerts are pure, spontaneous masterpieces involving the talent of a few select individuals. They are as one-of-a-kind as it gets,” said Robin Litt, executive director of the Vail Jazz Foundation.

Tickets are limited and can be purchased at vailjazz.org for $30 in advance. Larkspur will have a $30 food and beverage minimum per person.
