LIONSHEAD, Colorado Thursday’s Jazz at Vail Square performance features one of the most swinging bands in jazz, the Jeff Hamilton Trio. Jeff is an amazing drummer, and until youve seen and heard him play, you havent experienced what a great jazz drummer can do in a trio setting, said Howard Stone, artistic director and chair of the Vail Jazz Foundation, which produces Jazz at Vail Square. Hamiltons resume reads like a whos who of jazz, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Lionel Hampton, Monty Alexander Trio, Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd, Ella Fitzgerald, the Count Basie Orchestra, Rosemary Clooney and Diana Krall. Hamilton is known around the world for his originality and versatility. Hamilton is joined by veteran pianist and arranger Tamir Hendelman, who has been with the Trio since 2000 and shortly thereafter took over the piano chair in the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. Hendelman balances a very active schedule of performances with the Trio and CHJO along with many appearances as a leader of his own trio and as an accompanist for many of the top jazz vocalists on the scene today. The Trio is completed by LA-based bassist Christoph Luty, whose melodic bass lines and solos create a big, natural sound, John Clayton, director of education for the Vail Jazz Foundation and featured artist at the Labor Day Weekend Party, described Lutys talent in this way: Christophs playing exemplifies swinging bass lines, lyrical solos, and a great natural sound that is huge and full. The concert series continues this Thursday for three more shows. Following a successful opening night concert with multi-platinum selling singer, songwriter and saxophonist Curtis Stigers, Jazz at Vail Square continued last Thursday with Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue to an overflowing tent of enthusiastic fans on a rainy night. Next week brings a Latin Jazz experience with Chuchito Valdes, and the final concert features the Clayton Brothers Quintet and VJF All-Stars.The outdoor venue is located in the inner courtyard just outside the Arrabelle hotel in Lionshead. With tented seating for 250 people, the concerts are presented rain or shine. For more information, visit http://www.vailjazz.org
