Jewel guides for Yule tide

Still searching for the perfect holiday gift for that special someone?
A new specialty store in the Edwards Riverwalk shopping center could provide the answer.
The Hughes Collection of Fine Jewelry and Gifts opened this past week with a most unique and varied array of one-of-a-kind gifts in the Vail Valley.
After 21 of years of owning and operating one of the most successful jewelry stores in Vail Village, Tom and Diane Hughes saw an opportunity to open a second store downvalley and jumped on it.
“We love Vail and we have loyal customers in our Village store but there’s no question that the heart of the Vail Valley has moved West,” said Tom Hughes. “We couldn’t ignore it anymore. Edwards and the surrounding areas don’t rely on a seasonal clientele as much as Vail Village. It just made sense to have a store that could be a little closer to the customer.”
Hughes’ commitment to the downvalley store is so strong that he moved his studio to the Edwards location.

“It was a big decision for Tom to move his whole setup to Edwards,” said Diane Hughes. “Our thinking is that the client can talk to Tom directly if they have custom requests or questions. Our clientele is accustomed to seeing Tom and talking to him personally. Often times they just want to see what he’s working on at the moment.
“This way too, if they need to have repairs or adjustments made it can be done while they wait. It’s all part of our service and convenience, and a way to stay in closer contact with our customers.”
Unlike the Vail Village store, the Hughes’ shop in Riverwalk offers much more than just jewelry.
In cooperation with the Clagget-Rey Art Gallery in Vail, the downvalley store displays a beautiful sampling of select paintings and sculptures. They’ve expanded also into decorative home furnishing items such as designer frames, glass wear, vases, limited edition hand bags and leather pieces.
“We’re very excited about this new venture of ours,” said Tom. “We want the customer to come in and discover for themselves all that we have. It’s really quite different from anything we’ve done before.”
The variety in the store will constantly change, as Tom and Diane plan to introduce new artists all the time.
The warm ambience of the shop, with its soft lighting and high-end finishes, is in stark contrast to the previous tenants.
Funke Hockey vacated the space in late summer and, in Sept., the Hughes’ began their renovation.
The result is remarkable.
“We’re really pleased with the way it all came together,” said Diane “And, we’re anxious to show it off.”
The Hughes Collection of Fine Jewelry and Gifts is located next to Ptarmigan sports in the Riverwalk shopping Center.
