VAIL, Colorado ” Jim Morgan, publisher of the Summit Daily News, has been named general manager of Gypsum-based Colorado Mountain News Media, parent company of the Vail Daily.

Morgan has replaced Steve Pope as general manager of the group, a subsidiary of Swift Communications, based in Reno, Nev. Pope recently resigned as both general manager of Colorado Mountain News Media and publisher of the Vail Daily to take the publisher’s job at the Colorado Springs Gazette.

“While this is a challenging time for the newspaper industry, I’m excited,” said Morgan, who has been assistant general manager of Colorado Mountain News Media since late 2007 and publisher of the Summit Daily since March 2004. “CMNM is blessed with extraordinarily talented and dedicated employees who together produce some of the best newspapers in the entire Rocky Mountain region.”

Morgan, a Summit County resident, will continue as publisher of the Summit Daily.

“Jim exemplifies successful leadership which is critical in leading a complex organization like Colorado Mountain News Media,” said former Vail Daily Publisher Bob Brown, now the president of Swift Communications. “He has the ability to direct and challenge the very best that is in those he leads, and is always focused on what’s best for his clients and their communities.”

Brown and Morgan said the first order of business will be establishing the leadership direction for the Vail Daily.

“We have discussed a number of possibilities and we both expect to have that leadership position filled within several weeks,” Morgan said.

Colorado Mountain News Media publishes daily newspapers in Aspen, Glenwood Springs, Grand County, Grand Junction, Summit County and Vail, as well more than a dozen weekly newspapers and magazines in the Colorado high country.

Morgan, 55, is a 36-year veteran of the newspaper business, and has been a reporter, editor, publisher and group manager for companies in Alabama, Minnesota, Mississippi, Texas and Virginia.

He is a Virginia native and a graduate of James Madison University and attended graduate school at the University of Wales Centre for Journalism Studies as a Rotary International Scholar. He is married with two grown daughters who live out of state.
