John Elway in Vail for grand opening

VAIL, Colorado – It seemed the entire state of Colorado was at Elway’s in Vail Friday night for the restaurant’s official grand opening party, including John Elway himself.

The restaurant packed people in for wine, martinis and food. Elway spent most of the night at the same spot at the bar, obliging many guests who wanted their photos taken with him.

Elway said he’s excited to have his third restaurant location open up, and he’s happy it’s in Vail.

“Vail Resorts came to us about three years ago and we started talking about it, so we’re excited about the opportunity,” he said. “Obviously it’s a great resort town during the winter, as well as the summer, so we’re excited to be here.”

Elway said he’s not much of a skier, but that doesn’t mean he won’t visit Vail during winter.

“I have skied before, but I just don’t like doing anything I can get hurt at anymore, so I try not to do the dangerous things anymore,” he said.

Elway hasn’t been a regular to Vail in the past, but said he expects to be in town a lot more now that his restaurant is open. He said he’s looking forward to a “great, long-term relationship up here.”

And if you want to eat what the football legend likes to eat, order the bone-in rib-eye.

“I’m a rib-eye guy – I love the rib-eye,” Elway said.
