Keep ‘be,’ ‘do’ and ‘have’ in the proper order

Michael NortonVail, CO, Colorado

You have to be before you can do, and do before you can haveThis is my second favorite Zig Ziglar philosophy. Most businesses and individuals get the order backwards. They view the order as have, do, be.They want to have money, security, friends, good health, and other such things so that they can do all the things they dreamed of doing like vacationing, playing golf, skiing, giving back financially or through volunteering, and then they can be what they wanted to be. Or at least be recognized by others as being somebody. The order is actually be, do, have. You have to be before you can do and do before you can have. This means you have to be the right kind of person or business before you can do the good things you want to do for yourself and for the community. And when you meet the be and do part of the equation, then you can truly have those things in life that you really want. But what is it that we really want? If you own a business here in town you probably want another epic ski season (OK, maybe a little pun intended) like we had last year. A season that brings more guests, especially those guests who will stay at your lodges, eat in your restaurants, shop in your stores, and purchase your services. Individuals, whether you are a business owner or not, will undoubtedly have a wish list of the things you want to have or maybe even clearly defined goals and objectives. Now think about the order Be. Do. Have. Imagine being the kind of business or individual that guests, friends, and families would want to know or do business with. Your business would improve and your personal and professional relationships would improve tremendously. This would allow you to consistently do good things for yourself and for the community. The have could be defined and will be defined by each individual or business. In most cases what you want to have will be vastly different than what others want. When asking people what they want to have you will certainly hear the word money a lot. But please remember: Money will buy you a house but it will not buy you a home. Money will buy you a bed but not a good nights sleep. Money will buy you a companion but it is not going to buy you a friend. Money will buy you a good time but it will not buy you peace of mind. We want to have all of the things that money will buy, but I know there are many of you who want more of the things that money wont buy. And if you can be the right type of business or person, and do good and positive things, you will have all that you want, and probably start wanting more of what you already have. At the Vail Chamber & Business Association, we are working hard to be the right type of advocate for you. Reinforced by a positive and energizing staff, we will continue to do the things that you expect us to do on your behalf. Only then will we have the type of membership that you will appreciate belonging to. This is a great town with tremendous opportunity, especially for those who wish to be before they do, and do before they have.Call us at 970-477-0075 or email us at info@vailchamber.org and let us know what we can be and do for you.Michael Norton is the director of the Vail Chamber & Business Association.
