Kemp memorial set for Friday at National Cathedral

WASHINGTON ” A memorial service for Jack Kemp is planned at the Washington National Cathedral.

Cathedral officials say the memorial service for the former quarterback, congressman and one-time vice-presidential nominee is set for 2 p.m. Friday and is open to former colleagues, friends and family.

A bipartisan delegation headed by Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, is expected to attend.

Charles Colson is expected to speak and Episcopal Bishop John Bryson Chane will offer the invocation and benediction.

Kemp, a former quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, represented western New York for nine terms in Congress. He left the House for an unsuccessful presidential bid in 1988.

Kemp died of cancer Saturday at age 73 at his Bethesda home.
