VAIL ” A kidnapping victim was found at a friend’s home in Avon Saturday afternoon, about a day-and-a-half after his wife told police armed men had stormed their East Vail home, abducted her husband and stolen his car.

The man, 35-year-old Michael Moore, who was described as a longtime Eagle County resident, was “upset and concerned” but unharmed, Detective Sgt. Susan Douglas said Saturday afternoon.

“We have to find out where’s he’s been,” Douglas said. “We’re still trying to find the two suspects who broke in. We have to ensure his wife’s safety.”

Police were questioning Moore Saturday evening. Before speaking to him, among the few details police had about the case was that Moore, who works as a painter, and his wife were specifically targeted. The kidnapping, which occurred around 9 p.m. Thursday, was not a random act of violence, Douglas said.

The kidnappers, one of whom had a gun, forced their way into Moore’s home when he answered the door, police say. They then forced him to leave in his own green 1993 Mazda MX 6, with Colorado license place 599-JCZ, Douglas said.

His wife, whose identity hasn’t been released, was left behind and was taken to a safehouse after she called police, Douglas said.

Police also say Moore’s credit card was used in Denver early Friday and that he called his wife Friday night around 7:45 p.m., apparently also from Denver, to tell her he had escaped and that he was OK. He also told her he was afraid he was in trouble with the police because he had to “hurt” the men who kidnapped him in order to escape, Douglas said.

But Moore’s exact whereabouts between Thursday night and Saturday afternoon are still unclear as are the identities of the two suspects, Douglas said.

“We’re still treating it as a full-fledged kidnapping,” Douglas said.

Police may release more details today, she added.
