Kids will hand out free canvas bags in Avon

AVON, Colorado ” Avon Elementary students will hand out free reusable canvas bags at Sports Authority and Wal-Mart in Avon, Colorado Wednesday and Friday.

The students will hand out 100 on Wednesday at Sports Authority and 50 on Friday at Wal-Mart. They will be at the stores from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on both days. The students will sell bags once the free supply runs out.

The school is trying reduce the number of plastic bags used in Avon in a competition between 26 ski towns. The use of more than 20,000 plastic bags has been eliminated since the competition began in March.

“Our numbers at City Market are really high and that’s encouraging,” said Danita Chirichillo, Avon’s special event supervisor. “We also appreciate all of our smaller merchants who are doing their part to raise awareness and encourage shoppers to use reusable bags.””

Avon is also working to involve Wal-Mart and Home Depot, two of the largest merchants in Avon, to participate in the competition as well.
