Australian-based tutoring franchise Kip McGrath celebrated the grand opening of its first center in Eagle County recently, inside its new home in the Slifer, Smith, and Frampton building in Avon.Mayor Judy Yoder was on hand to congratulate owners Rob and Ann Foster, who moved back to Vail from New Zealand specifically to open the private tutoring center. “We’re thrilled to house new businesses,” said Yoder, “especially when they have to do with education. Welcome to Avon.”Ann Foster learned about Kip McGrath while substitute teaching in New Zealand, and was so impressed with the results of their students, she joined the company. The program tutors students ages 6-16 in math or English for a one hour and 20 minute session once a week beginning either at 3:30 p.m. or 5 p.m. (If the student needs help in both, two sessions are scheduled). The lessons are divided into six parts, three written, and three on the computer, and the curriculum of each student is tailored to his or her needs based on a free assessment test. In addition, students are given homework to complete in between sessions.Currently, Kip McGrath is tutoring 13 students from all over Eagle County, with the goal of reaching 150. Foster says that once the program reaches 50 students, they’ll be able to give scholarships to students who are unable to pay full tuition.Kip McGrath is open Monday through Friday and interested parents should call (970) 949-1883.– Scott Cunningham
