DILLON, Colorado ” The cast of the Lake Dillon Theatre’s new production, “I Love You Because” may be singing their way through the roles, but the story itself is based in reality.

“The show is basically a really fun musical sitcom,” said Chris Alleman, who, along with Juliana Black, co-directs and acts in the show.

The story, set in New York, follows two male roommates and two female best friends braving the dating scene.

Austin Bennet (played by Josh Blanchard) finds himself single at the beginning of the show, just as Marcy (played by Sara Seever) laments to her girlfriend Diana (played by Kelly Renoux) that she too is just getting over someone.

Their lives intertwine when Bennet’s brother Jeff (played by Ben Whitmore) set he and Austin up on a double date with Diana and Marcy.

“It’s the whole opposites attract thing,” Blanchard said of Austin and Marcy’s characters. “(Austin) is uptight and precise and knows his routine,” he said.

“And Marcy flies in the face of all that,” Seever said of her character.

While these two try to do what’s best for themselves and find love, Jeff and Diana hit it off as friends with benefits.

The characters seem to be always on the move, changing sets from the brothers’ bachelor pad to a coffee shop to a bar and back again. And along with Alleman and Black, who predominantly play bartenders among their chorus parts, the six characters are continuously being rotated and combined in different scenes creating fresh dynamics throughout.

Alleman said he chose this play first off because of the music, but also because the play “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” was such a big hit for the theater.

“Who doesn’t like a romantic comedy?” he said.

“I Love You Because” opens tonight and runs Fridays through Sundays through March 30.
