Lane closures near Eagle expected through Sunday

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado – The Colorado Department of Transportation will continue to close one lane of Interstate 70 in each direction from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this week through Sunday between Wolcott and Eagle. Crews have been working daily to clean up a diesel fuel spill at mile marker 150 east of Eagle and west of Wolcott that occurred on March 8.

The extent of the contamination is still being determined at this time. It is estimated that about 7,200 gallons of fuel were leaked into the median and on the north side of the interstate. Hazardous materials crews have been excavating and backfilling soil since the incident occurred and have isolated the remaining impacted areas to the median and underneath the eastbound lane of the interstate. Crews have dug a trench on the south side of the interstate to verify that the spill has not spread downhill from underneath I-70.

Both lanes of the interstate will be open during the evenings since no cleanup efforts will be taking place at that time. There is currently no estimate as to how long the entire cleanup process will take. The speed limit has been reduced in the area to 55 mph and the Colorado Department of Transportation reminds motorists to slow down.
