Large-format photog exhibits new work in Vail
VAIL – Claggett/Rey Gallery in Vail is exhibiting more than 25 new sepia-toned large format photographs by photographer Ben Ham.
“Ben Ham is rare in the world of photography, as he chooses to trust his instincts with his chosen subjects and up to 50 pounds of camera equipment,” said gallery owner Bill Rey. “From the low country to the wine country, desert southwest and the Rockies, Ben takes us on a sepia-toned journey of emotion. Not only is his camera large format but so are his printed images, which allow one to wander and wonder, how is it possible to truly capture every subtle nuance?”
Ham uses an 8-by-10 camera that has the capability to capture great detail and information in each shot. In a predominantly digital age, Ham finds the process with the large-format camera much more contemplative, and finds it gives him a better sense of seeing his subject. He prefers to print the images in a sepia toned black and white.
“There’s something aesthetic and artistic about black and white that I don’t feel in color,” he said. “It requires you to think in a compositional way.”
Ham’s new work is on display at the gallery through Jan. 22.
“We are honored to represent a man who stands so strong with the conviction of his chosen passion,” Rey said. “Ben is a perfectionist from the first click to the printing, mounting and framing and he does it all to give collectors quality with the conscience and conviction of a job well done.”
