Lasting Impressions: Kitchen master

“I love kitchens,” says Larson, a general contractor and designer who’s built homes in the Grand Valley area for the past 30 years. Standing in one of his Fruita homes, the kitchen is centrally located and spacious.

“When you have company, it’s the most used room in the whole house. I’ve been in lots of homes, and I’m surprised how small and confined the kitchens are,” he says.

Terry, who owns Larson and Larson Enterprises in Grand Junction, learned his craft on the job as a builder in Denver. Ever since moving to the Grand Valley in 1974, he has built homes from Loma to Palisade, as well as in Glade Park and Collbran. He builds mostly in the $300,000-plus range.

And he selects high-end appliances to go with his beautiful, comfortable kitchens. Sometimes it might be a range with two ovens ” one small, one large ” so you can bake a pie at a different temperature while you roast a turkey, or save energy when you’re cooking a small item.

“I like good appliances. Most people who’ve had a $400 stove all their life, when they get something of much higher quality, they really appreciate it,” Larson says.

He likes to orient houses in order to take advantage of any views available on a particular lot. He tends to build patios on the east side of homes so there’s a shady spot at the end of a workday.

Many of his homes have been featured in Grand Junction’s Parade of Homes, where he once received an award for the best floor plan in a particular price range.

Occasionally he builds custom homes for people who contact him after viewing one of his spec homes.

“And I’ve been around long enough to get a lot of referrals,” Larson says. “It’s pretty rare people get to build a house for themselves. It’s fun to participate in one of their life dreams.”
