Layoffs possible at Durango schools
DURANGO, Colorado ” Durango school officials say layoffs are possible next year if enrollment shrinks and the Legislature cuts funding.
Superintendent Keith Owen says there could be fewer teachers at Durango High School next year if enrollment falls as expected from about 1,500 this school year to under 1,200 next year. Owen says support staff and administrators could also be laid off.
The district’s chief financial officer, Laine Gibson, says the district would lose $450,000 if state lawmakers accept a plan to reduce cost-of-living increases to 2000-01 levels.
She says a bill that would cut $163,000 in funding for this school year could all also mean budget cuts.
