LEADVILLE — On June 24 and 25, the Leadville BBQ and Brew Festival will welcome some of the country’s best pit masters to grill and smoke at 10,152 feet. Local microbrews, performances by nine bands and a car and motorcycle show are all part of the two-day festival, plus a kids’ cook-off and kids’ zone with carnival games and prizes hosted by Leadville’s Greater Heights Academy.

To close the festival, the WMD Bluegrass Band will give a special performance at the Tabor Opera House on Saturday, June 25, at 7 p.m.

The Leadville BBQ and Brew Festival is a Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned event and a cup event for the Rocky Mountain BBQ Association. Pit masters will vie for $10,152 in prizes, with as many as 36 teams competing in four categories — chicken, pork ribs, pork and brisket. A Peoples’ Choice award will be given Saturday for competitors who are selling barbecue to the public.

In addition to barbeque, the event includes Colorado microbrews from Leadville’s own Periodic Brewing, opened in late 2015, as well as Big Choice Brewing in Broomfield, Eddyline Brewery in Buena Vista, Front Range Brewing in Lafayette, Rutkey Distributing in Leadville and Westminster Brewing in Westminster.

The festival begins at 10 a.m. Friday, June 26, with the national anthem on the stage at the south end of Harrison Avenue between the historic Silver Dollar Saloon and the Tabor Opera House, followed by the start of the barbecue competition. Live music begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 9 p.m.

Festivities continue at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 25, and culminate at 5 p.m. with the awards ceremony. Details can be found at http://www.leadville twinlakes.com or by calling 719-486-3900.
