Learning Center celebrates former Vail Valley volunteer
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL, Colorado –Barbara Treat’s main cause in life revolved around helping children in the Vail Valley.
That’s why board members and volunteers at the Family Learning Center in Edwards are celebrating Treat’s memory with its annual Barbara Treat Memorial Golf Tournament Friday.
“She was such a huge volunteer in the community,” said Leslie Madison, a Family Learning Center board member and volunteer.
The Vail Valley Foundation awarded Treat with the Ernie Bender award for her volunteerism in 2002, and Madison said she was known for her generosity. Treat died of cancer about three years ago.
Treat was on the board at the Learning Center for several years, and helped the organization raise a lot of money, Madison said.
The Family Learning Center provides child care and education to families in the valley who cannot afford childcare. Families are granted scholarships based on financial need, and Madison said no family pays the full amount for what the care and education actually costs.
“We try to keep (tuition) affordable for everybody,” Madison said.
Friday’s golf tournament costs $1,200 per team of four golfers. Madison said the school usually operates with about a $300,000 shortfall, so the golf tournament is one way the Family Learning Center makes up for some of its costs.
There will also be a silent auction at Thursday’s silent auction and tee-off party, in Cordillera, that will sell more than 200 bottles of wine.
