Legendary jazz club comes to Vail Valley
VAIL, Colorado- The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, named after New York’s famous jazz club, will perform at the Vail Valley’s Vilar Center on today at 7:30 p.m. The 16-member group features performers, composers and arrangers, including John Mosca and Dick Oatts. The New York Times calls the group, “one of New York’s institutions.”The group began life as the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1966 and has been a fixture for 43 years at the famed New York City nightclub, the Village Vanguard. After performing together for 37 years, the group won its first Grammy in 2004. In 2009, the group earned a second Grammy for “best large jazz ensemble” for its album “Monday Night at The Village Vanguard.” “There probably isn’t a big band in the country that can rival the bullish precision of this one,” wrote Gary Giddins, a jazz critic for The New Yorker. “Not only is the clockwork impeccable, but it takes risks, commissions new pieces and has exceptional soloists in every section.”The concert is a part of the Vilar Center’s ‘I Love NY Series’ which celebrates the best of New York coming to Beaver Creek. The following New York-inspired restaurant specials will be available before and after the performance: 18-inch New York-style Big Moose Pizza at the Blue Moose for $16; a three-course meal at the Beaver Creek Chophouse featuring empire New York strip oscar for $33 and $5 Big Apple martinis; and the New York City Big Apple roll and hot sake at Foxnut Asian Fusion & Sushi for $15. Patrons must show tickets and reservations are recommended.
