Letter: Bring the troops home now

Today, as we “celebrate” five years of death, destruction and debt, Mr. Bush simply states that deposing Saddam Hussein was “worth it!” Nearly 4,000 Americans have lost their lives and 20,000 more American servicemen have been injured and a trillion or more dollars have “gone down the tubes.” And he says “it was worth it”. What’s he been smoking? And then he continues on with the idiocy when he declares that we can’t stop now. Why not now? Saddam is gone and there were no weapons of mass destruction. Is it because he caused the present Iraqi nightmare? Perhaps so, but the Iraqis have had five years to come up with an effective government; and five years to repair their infra structure; and five years to hire and train a police force.

But instead of doing those things, the government and the various religious factions and the ethnic groups and the warlords have merely sought “supremacy.” And so, again I ask, “why not now?” Additionally, many folks, including me, believe that our very presence is a rallying point for al Qaeda. The mindless terrorists ” mostly “kids” ” are coming to Iraq from Saudi Arabia and elsewhere because they hate us and because they have nothing else to do with their lives. Unfortunately, there is an endless supply of those “kids,” and furthermore, there will be an endless supply of those “kids” five years from now! That’s just the way it is in the Middle East and our continued presence will accomplish nothing. And so I say, no more American deaths and no more American wounded; bring the troops home now!
