Letter: Conservative family values?

Gus Nicholson

Americans are working harder and adjusted for inflation, make less or about the same as they were fifty and even forty years ago. This means, in order to sustain a similar lifestyle as the parents that raised them, both spouses must work.

So I wonder, when conservatives say we must do things that promote the nuclear family, what exactly are those things? Are they expand day care? Are they funding faith-based initiatives with federal grants so they can be on an equal footing with private initiatives?

If conservatives were true to family values, they would recognize the hypocrisy of promoting economic initiatives such as corporate welfare, that require Americans to send both parents into the work force, take lower-paying service jobs, work longer hours, forgo vacation time. When parents aren’t home, strangers often raise their children. Whose values are they then learning?
