Letter: Shame on us, Vail Valley, for road-kill
Eagle, CO Colorado
Why are all the elk and deer dying on the highway? Every day on the I-70 corridor many, many animals are killed. We live in one of wealthiest communities in Colorado yet what have we done to protect them? We’ve taken their winter range and built all these million-dollar homes yet we have no wildlife corridor? Why don’t we have tunnels under the highway for their migration/water/food sources? Does anyone else notice this? Shame on us.
Colorado Department of Transportation began work last fall on a wildlife fence that runs in stretches from Dowd Junction to Eagle along I-70. Another group focusing on this problem on a wider level is the Southern Rockies Ecosystem Project, online at http://www.restoretherockies.org. This is the group seeking to build a wildlife overpass near the Vail Pass summit.
