Lions Club accepting tsunami donations

Daily Staff Report

Individuals and businesses in the valley can donate directly to tsunami relief and rebuilding efforts in South Asia through Eagle Lions Club.Local donations will be directed through the Lions Clubs International Foundation, the Lions’ international charitable arm, said Paul Steinfort, local Lions contact for the relief effort. Steinfort said 100 percent of all donations will be made directly to the devastated areas, without any overhead. The Lions Clubs International Foundation has established accounts in every area of the world in which there are Lions clubs, so donations go directly to the Lions districts’ accounts in those countries, he said. Emergency grants for immediate relief and rebuilding grants for longer-term benefits are the two ways the Lions Clubs International Foundation distributes donations. Almost $1 million has already been channeled to or pledged to South Asia through the Foundation.Donors can be confidant the Lions Clubs International Foundation will continue to pour money into the area for several years, even after the initial period of generosity is over, Steinfort said. Some 73,000 Lions clubs in the battered region have already established commissions to deal with critical issues, and the Lions of Sri Lanka will concentrate their efforts on building emergency shelters and homes in the months and years to come, according to Steinfort. For more information, call Paul Steinfort at (970) 524-9366.Vail, Colorado
