VAIL – Cogswell Gallery artist Darcie Peet was recently honored at the gala awards reception and dinner for Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters. The reception included the annual Estes Park-Painting, and the Parks Exhibition hosted professional artists from all over the country, including Vermont and Hawaii.During this past August, nearly 100 of the country’s top names in plein air art spread out to paint “on location” at Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes.

The event soared from the high altitude tundra of Trail Ridge Road, to serene mountain lakes, crashing falls and the historic Stanley Hotel. The 10 days of painting outdoors, braving the ever-changing weather and critters, was highlighted by the final competition and two-day exhibit.Darcie Peet was honored to receive not only the Collector’s Choice Award for her painting “Sun, Rain and Blue Gentian,” but also the Artists’ Choice Award for “Dusk Shadows Above Gorge Lakes.”

This particular award is based on a vote by all participating artists, who bring a very critical and discerning eye to this difficult decision.Plein air painting, the practice of painting in the field, is arguably the most challenging form of painting, as well as the quickest means by which to master and perfect technique. Swiftly changing light and shadow forces the mind to register visual information more quickly, and the hand to trust itself and work more instinctively. The show was judged by Kristin Bucher, who is the art editor for SouthWest Art. The miniature show, judged by Wildlife Art Magazine Publisher Robert Koenke, will be hung in the galleries through September 30th.

During the August Vail Wine and Arts Faire, Peet painted on location, demonstrated and talked with visitors on behalf of Cogswell Gallery. During the summer and fall, she may often be seen painting on location throughout Vail and the Vail Valley.A Copper Mountain and Tucson resident, Peet, received a bachelor of art degree in Art from Colorado College in Colorado Springs. She has also studied with noted artists Matt Smith, Skip Whitcomb, Jove Wang, Wayne Wolfe, George Strickland, Kenn Backhaus and Joe Abbrescia.Peet is a Juried Artist Member of the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters and Tucson Plein Air Painters’ Society. She is a member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and a Signature Member of the American Plains Artists Association.

Peet was recently profiled in Art Life-Arizona. More of her work can be seen at Cogswell Gallery in Vail and at Snowfire Gallery in Estes Park. She is also represented by El Presidio Gallery in Tucson, Ariz., Big Horn Gallery in Tubac, Ariz., and Big Horn Gallery in Cody, Wyo.The Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters organization focuses on the advancement of plein air painting as a unique form of artistic expression, and within the Rocky Mountain Region.
