1. Vail Daily: What does art mean to you?Melissa Sherowski: As Nietzsche says, “Art is the central task of life.” It is that which gives life meaning and depth; without which living would be flat and empty. The desire to create is what gets me out of bed in the morning (and keeps me up late at night).2. VD: When did you know you wanted to become an artist?MS: Art has always spoken to me, but only in the last couple of years did I decide that I wanted to devote my energy to being a painter. I haven’t had any formal training. Everything I’ve learned has been through trial and error and reading tons of books on technique and materials. I paint as much as possible and trust that through practice I’ll achieve enlightenment.3. VD: What inspires you to create? What sort of mood do you have to be in?MS: Recently I’ve found myself inspired less by my immediate surroundings and more by ideas and concepts. I’ve become fascinated by the universe – cosmology, astronomy, the origin of all things. I need only consider the fact that every atom in our bodies was forged by gravity in the furnace of a star and I want to paint. 4. VD: Describe your style.MS: My current work represents a new stage in my development as an artist. I’ve set aside representational painting in favor of looser, more abstract renderings. I am experimenting with texture, sheen and opacity as design elements, using the full spectrum of acrylic additives. My paintings are many-layered and full of rich color. 5. VD: If you could meet any artist (alive or dead) who would it be? What would you talk about?MS: I would love to meet Wallace Stevens. I would want to discuss philosophical assassins and the nature of human meaning.6. VD: Do you own a favorite piece of art? If so, describe it and tell us why you bought it? MS: My favorite piece of art at the moment was given to me by my six-year-old son. It is a mixed media cut-out of a dragon and is truly inspiring! 7. VD: Where do you sell your art?MS: I sell my art online at http://www.melissasherowski.etsy.com and at various shows. I also do custom work and can be contacted for that at msherowski@gmail.com.
