Before you say something sarcastic, think for a moment about what it takes to be the best in the world at anything, and about how few of us will breathe that rarified air.

“I’ve had a couple heads turn when I’m practicing,” Vetter said.

The current record is 224, set by Frederick G. Magliacane at Bellair Lanes, in Daytona Beach, Fla, on Jan 25, 2013.

In practice a couple days ago, Vetter rolled a 226, so he likes his chances.

“The record thing came about by accident,” Vetter explained.

He has been bowling recreationally for a long time, and got bored. He started bowling with his left hand, then threw a huge hook between his legs.

He started wondering if anyone kept stats about this sort of thing, so he went to the Guinness website and learned, yes, it’s real and Mr. Magliacane owns the record — at least for now.

He has to beat 224, and witnesses have to attest that he didn’t break any rules, and there are rules.

“Basically, bowl every single ball between the legs and don’t bowl any other way,” Vetter said.

Then he sends the material to the Guinness book people. They let him know in their own good time whether the world record is his.

“It’s a little bit more of a process than just rolling the game,” Vetter said

He’s been practicing most evenings after getting off work at Alpine Lock and Safe in the Edwards Commercial Park. Thursday he rested; Friday he rolls for the record.

“I feel like I’m ready to rock,” Vetter said.
