EAGLE ” A man who ran over his girlfriend was sentenced to 12 years in prison Monday, said Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert.

Modesto Lujan, 46, of McCoy, pleaded guilty to felony first-degree assault and will not be eligible for parole, Hurlbert said.

The former girlfriend ” whose name is being withheld ” has had three surgeries on her legs. A former hairdresser, she cannot work due to the assault, Hurlbert said.

One of her legs is now shorter than the other, making it difficult for her to stand for very long, Hurlbert said.

“Her life has completely changed,” Hurlbert said.

Hurlbert has not yet asked a judge to order Lujan to pay the woman’s medical bills, but he plans on doing so, Hurlbert said.

Around 7 p.m., Oct. 17, Lujan and his then 55-year-old girlfriend argued as they drove down Colorado River Road west of Highway 131, authorities said.

Lujan pulled over and both stepped outside, where the argument escalated into a fight, authorities said.

Lujan then got behind the steering wheel and ran over the woman twice with his full-size pickup truck, authorities said.

Lujan carried the woman back inside the car and drove away, authorities said.

A person witnessed the assault and called police, who arrested Lujan on the way to the crime scene.

Paramedics drove the woman to a hospital in Glenwood Springs and she was then flown by helicopter to Denver Health Medical Center. She was in the hospital’s intensive care unit for three weeks.

Police arrested Lujan on suspicion of attempted murder, but prosecutors dropped the charge when they determined there was insufficient evidence to prove Lujan intended to kill his 55-year-old girlfriend.

“It’s a significant sentence,” Hurlbert said. “This was his first felony conviction.”
