Local high schoolers earn national honors

Daily Staff Report

EAGLE COUNTY – A pair of local high schoolers are in rare company.Riley Pack of Battle Mountain High School and Zachary Henry of Eagle Valley High School were named National Merit Scholar semifinalists, based on their scores on qualifying tests. Nationwide, only 50,000 of the 1.3 million students who took the tests earned a place on the list. In Colorado, Pack and Henry were among 280 students who earned a place on the semifinalists’ roster.About 90 percent of the nation’s semifinalists are expected to earn a “finalist” designation. About half of the finalists will be named “merit scholars” who are eligible for $33 million worth of scholarships. Walker Loetecher of Battle Mountain received a letter of commendation on his National Merit tests. While he isn’t eligible for that group’s scholarship program, he may be eligible for special scholarships sponsored by various corporations and foundations.Vail, Colorado
