There are several relief efforts underway in Eagle County: Cans for Katrina: Heres what Jane Leptovska and Karli Scherer are doing in their Cans for Katrina effort. Drop-off boxes for canned food: Vail Daily building in Eagle-Vail; Battle Mountain High School; Red Sandstone Elementary School; Avon Recreation Center. Items can also be dropped off at Scherers home. Call 331-9920 to set up a time. Cans for cash donations are at: Mojo Music in Avon; Radio Shack in Avon; Avon Bakery; the Blue Moose in Beaver Creek.
• Donations for hurricane relief will be accepted at the final Minturn Market Saturday in the market tent. Some vendors plan to give portions of their sales as well. All proceeds go to the American Red Cross.• Verbatim Booksellers and The Bookworm will donate one dollar for every “Lord of the Flies” copy sold as part of the September valleywide read program. Alpine Bank will match the total donation amount up to $50,000. Verbatim owner Robert Aiken chose the book because it “illustrates the savageness of mob mentality and the results of a society broken down,” he said.• Red Canyon High School in conjunction with Gypsum Creek Middle School is sponsoring a chili cook-off and silent auction at the Eagle Pavilion on Sept. 24 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Entrance is $5 to grab some chili and all proceeds go to a districtwide fund Alpine Bank is matching.• Pamela Saden, a photographer and jewelry maker, is selling her art Monday at her home in Vail.
