Local photographer strives to expose what goes unnoticed

Special to the Daily/Dave Engle

AVON ” An exhibit of photographs by Dave Engle is on display at Loaded Joe’s in Avon through Oct. 31. The show is called “Nightvision in the Highlands” and the opening reception is today from 4 to 10 p.m. The exhibition, which is composed of silver gelatin prints, explores a particular neighborhood during nighttime using long exposure times. Photography is a medium that depends primarily on light … and lack of, Engle said. This series, much like any photograph, captures a moment in time.

Engle, owner of local commercial photography company Definitive Imagery, has been photographing people and places for more than a decade with a documentary and journalistic approach. His photography career began at an early age when he received a camera that he used for recording friends, family and vacations. As a photographer, Engle looks at photography primarily as a science.

“This photographic series, ‘Nightvision in the Highlands,’ is an exercise in lengthy, nocturnal exposures,” Engle wrote in an artist statement. “Most of the time it would require 6 to 8 hours to get through a roll of 120 and I often found myself strolling in the door at 2 or 3 a.m. Fortunately, the fall of 2005 was mild and I had the opportunity to get out on several nights when the temperature was conducive to photography.

The wind was also a factor for me because part of my goal was to record a stationary scene. There were a few nights that did not have even a whisper of wind; those were the nights that produced the best detail in the motionless foliage.”

Engle’s initial thoughts to this style of photography centered around how non-traditional the work appears, he said. As a photographer, he strives to position the viewer as close as possible to an event, time or situation without actually being there.

“I was compelled to produce my own compositions of these areas that have little to see due to the darkness. I wanted to expose and freeze what may otherwise go unnoticed. I wanted to put to film what may not be so easily observed during a specific time of our rotation.”
