EDWARDS, Colorado –The Youth Foundation and The Alpine Arts Center will feature artwork from Vail Mountain School and Battle Mountain High School students in a first-ever student art show at the Alpine Arts Center on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Artwork on display consists of mixed-media painting, drawings, digital images and ceramic sculptures. Some of the artists created pieces specifically for this show, while others chose their favorite projects from art classes to display and raise money for The Youth Foundation’s Alpine Arts Scholarship Program.

Through this gallery exhibit, students are learning about the process of hanging and pricing their work, as well as gaining experience representing themselves in a gallery setting. During Wednesday’s art show and reception, the students will be available to answer questions about their artwork and explain their creative process.

Marlene Chavarria, a sophomore of Battle Mountain High School chose to dedicate her piece, a clay sculpture that depicts a human figure rooted to the ground symbolizing strength, support, and courage, to her grandmother and The Youth Foundation.

“At first I had no clue what I would do for the art show, but it didn’t take me long to get some inspiration from the people who have been very supportive of me,” she said. “They have been a big part of my life and I am so thankful for their belief in me. The human figure is reaching up to the sky releasing a bird, which represents students taking flight and reaching for the stars.”

Students such as Marlene are benefitting from the enriching art classes the Alpine Arts Center provides. Alpine Arts Center and The Youth Foundation have teamed up to offer youth art scholarships for art classes in mediums including painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, mixed media, photography, jewelry, and more. This scholarship provides an opportunity for all youth in the Vail Valley (of all ages and abilities) an outlet for creativity and a chance to enhance school art curriculum. Classes are offered in 6 to 8 weeks sessions during the school year, and in the summer through weeklong summer camps and weekly classes.

Wednesday’s art show will include appetizers and refreshments and live music. A $10 donation is requested at the door. Kid’s are welcome.
